Thoracic (mid back) mobility is one of the most important areas of the body to mobilise for both the athlete and regular Joe. The thoracic spine plays a huge role in keeping the shoulders and lower back functioning well and pain free. Furthermore, those that lack mobility through their thoracic spine are subject to more injuries involving the shoulder and neck, as well as having an increased prevalence of low back pain.
Most of us sit in flexion all day, hunched over a computer, slouched in a car or our eyes down into your phone. This causes poor posture and often poor extension, which can lead to improper movement patterns, compensations and eventually pain and injury.
Your body will always take the path of least resistance and seek out extra extension from other areas – areas that are not made to or have the ability to provide the extension needed. This compensation can lead to injuries up and down the body.
Try the below exercises to improve thoracic mobility!
