Comprehensive Care for

Infant Feeding Issues

Whether it is breatsfeeding or bottle feeding challanges, we have  both personal and professional experience and we understand how challenging infant feeding can be and are here to support you and your baby and your family through this journey both physically and emotionally.

Osteopathy for Babies and Breastfeeding Support

Our Paediatric Osteopaths use gentle techniques to reduce tension in connective tissues, addressing moulding issues and cranial nerve tension that can impact breastfeeding, digestion, and other newborn and baby feeding concerns.

With the rise in tongue and lip tie diagnoses, surgical release often improves breastfeeding, but residual issues may remain. Osteopathic treatment helps optimise mouth and jaw mechanics, as well as neural and connective tissue function, to support a new feeding pattern.

How can our Osteopaths Support Breastfeeding Challenges?

For Baby:

  • Latching Issues: Neck and jaw restrictions, often linked to birth, may affect latching. Gentle Osteopathic treatment can help improve comfort.
  • Lip and Tongue Ties: Our Osteopaths can assess and address these or refer for further care if needed.
  • Colic, Wind, or Reflux: Tension in the neck, ribs, or spine may contribute to discomfort. Osteopathic care can help ease these issues.

For Mum:

  • Positioning and Latch: Advice and treatment can improve positioning and relieve upper body discomfort.
  • Mastitis: Osteopathy may help relieve tension and support fluid flow to ease symptoms.
  • Stress and Well-being: Gentle care can help you feel more relaxed and balanced during this time.
  • We also provide care for mothers, assisting with milk supply, engorgement, and mastitis to support your breastfeeding journey. With Osteopathic support, breastfeeding challenges can be addressed, helping you and your baby find greater comfort and confidence.

Infant feeding issues

Our osteopaths support families with breastfeeding and bottle-feeding challenges through baby assessments to review progress in meeting musculoskeletal and developmental milestones expected by age or stage, education about movement and guidance on activities to promote postural stability and physical skills for feeding.

We also provide hands-on treatment and care and exercises for both mum and baby before and after tongue or lip tie release and exercise prescription.

The Mother-Baby Dyad

Birth isn’t the only factor that can affect a baby’s development. The baby’s position during pregnancy—whether breech, transverse, or engaged early—can influence moulding. Stress during pregnancy, birth, or after, as well as positional restrictions in the womb, can also impact primitive reflexes, which play a key role in breastfeeding. This means even babies born via caesarean can experience breastfeeding and bottle challenges.

We consider both the mum and baby, so an assessment includes examination of oral function for the infant and we provide advice on positioning and attachment and education about how to manage common feeding issues.

We work with the relationship between the mother and baby in caring for them both to address feeding issues.
