Many people with low back pain – either acute on chronic – have been told by a practitioner that their back is “out” – whether it be a joint, disc or muscle. To be very blunt – when you feel pain in your low back, or any part of your spine for that matter, there is nothing that is “out” that is the source of your pain. There is no “out of alignment” or “out of place” – it just doesn’t happen!
In fact, telling a patient that their back is “out” and needs to be “put back in” may actually cause fear that there is something really wrong with that person, and could lead to practitioner dependence.
Of course many people feel much better when presenting with back pain after manual therapy – including Osteopathy, Clinical Pilates and Myotherapy. However, this is most likely due to a reduction in pain, muscle tone and improved education as to what is accurately going on – rather than “putting something back in”.
At the Sports & Spinal Group, we take pride in providing clear and simple explanations of why you are in pain, how we can help you, and what you can do to achieve your best state of health.
