2 key areas to focus on to beat your hip pain – a clue – they aren’t at the hip!

One of the most common injuries we see and work with on a regular basis within the clinic is hip pain.

Generally, we are working with people that have some sort of impingement syndrome. These patients generally complain of a painful pinching or “tightness” deep in the front of the hip.

The easy thing to do is focus all your energy on the hip itself with both hands-on treatment and rehabilitation. The reason why this isn’t generally effective is because impingement is a condition of too much motion at the hip joint. We don’t always want the hip to have more mobility as we run the risk of making the situation worse.

We actually want the opposite, or less motion at the hip joint whilst substituting this with more stability. The way we do this is by moving more from the joints above and below the hip. So, if we don’t move well through the thoracic spine (mid back) and ankle joint, we force increased stress on the hip. Often times a few simple cues are enough to get you moving from the right areas. See the video’s below for simple drills to get both your Thoracic Spine and ankle joint moving better – if not, come and see us at the clinic!
